Thank you for Tweeting

I get most of my breaking news (or just regular news) off Twitter. I’m pretty sure that’s not how it’s supposed to be, shouldn’t newspapers should take precedence over social networks? I mean, there are blogs, newspapers and all other media outlets that specialize on news and should be better than Twitter at this but from me this seems to have been the way I’ve stumbled across news lately.

Earthquake near my hometown? First I’ve seen it in my Twitter feed then I googled it. Steve jobs dies? First place I see it? Twitter then Facebook and when I google it and see most articles are written much later than the tweets. So am I right or wrong to let Twitter overrule blogs, newspapers and other media channels in my search for news?

I’m sure it’s different for everyone but what I’m wondering is could following the relevant people on twitter can bring you the news faster than any one else can? And I’m not even talking about journalists or news associations and so on, cause, for instance, from the two examples I gave earlier neither of them came (at first) from the media in my twitter feed.

By now, you may have noticed I’m all pro-twitter. 100%. I think it’s one of the best if not the best application of social media out there. I believe that Twitter has the ability to redirect traffic towards your website or company better than any other social network if used in a correct manner. And if I’ve not convinced you yet with my pro-twitter approach watch this fun video maybe it will and please feel free to tell me your opinions.

PS – Observing a regular Friday on my twitter feed I found it flooded with #ff hash tags and seeing as I am curious, intrigued and interested by all things Twitter I want to know your opinions. Do you actually follow (on) Fridays?
